Welcome to the SIMS website
The Sydney Institute of Marine Science is a joint venture, research facility based on Sydney Harbour's North Shore at Chowder Bay. It will bring together teams of leading scientists to work on issues that are critical for the management of our coastal and oceanic environments.
Research
SIMS is bringing together the marine expertise of a number of universities and government agencies to form a marine institute dedicated to, and situated in, an urban marine environment.

How You Can Help
Play a major role in Australia's scientific history and become actively involved in SIMS today. As carer for our waterways, keeping a watch on the health and advising on its management as the city grows, SIMS needs your help.
IMOS @ SIMS
The Integrated Marine Observing System, or IMOS, is a nation-wide collaborative program designed to observe the oceans around Australia, including the coastal oceans and the 'bluewater' open oceans. The Sydney Institute of Marine Science has been chosen as the NSW Node and will coordinate IMOS deployments along the NSW coast line. IMOS will provide data to support research on many of the critical marine issues facing Australia, including climate change and sustainability of ecosystems. Twenty-seven separate institutions will be involved in the new facility, which is funded under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy. IMOS partners comprise most of the universities and agencies with capability in ocean and marine research. The program has strong links with similar international programs and agencies.
